Taking a Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Data & Analytics Officer focus to driving strategy, Customer and business outcomes

I have enjoyed feedback I received from the previous “serve somebody” posts I’ve made and was recently asked “what makes coaching and mentoring effective?”

Good question…and one that required reflection and input from some who I have coached, from which the below integrated framework revealed itself as what has been effective and made a difference.

In framing the coaching challenge, individuals, organizations and situations are increasingly complex, and coaching efforts should consider this complexity but deployed in a straightforward and direct way. There is no shortage of tools, tests and individual data to be tried or used, but in truly serving the individual, a coach’s greatest tools are empathy, listening, trust and the personal connection forged with the individual.

A multi-layered integrated approach, which uses data in a targeted manner, is required. One that recognizes dimensions of individual motivation, the situations they navigate, a strategic focus on where impact can be maximized and the habits that lead to the desired results.

• Mindset and attitude: What drives the individual and what meaning does their work have beyond successful completion alone. What drives their unconscious and conscious motivations, what is their “why”.
• Approach and frame: How does the person approach their work and challenges, what are their trademark ways of addressing situations and ways of being effective. “How” do they navigate at work. Real life examples and data serve well here as a mirror.
• Refined focus: Using data and context to focus on the right areas of impact being addressed – like binoculars – and that perceived strengths are driving improvements and gaps being closed. “What” are the topics, situations, and opportunities in which they engage.
• Tools and habits: Creating tools, habits and methods for being efficient and scalable for growth, addressing challenges and opportunities. These are the repeatable, tangible actions that ingrain forward movement.

In working with individuals and groups, these topics are driven by incisive questions, deep listening, patience, sharing personal stories, experiences and hard-won learning and wisdom.

There are few things as satisfying professionally as serving another by making their professional efforts more rewarding and meaningful.

If you would like to discuss this further, I welcome you connecting.
